Fire safety at home and market
Prevention around LPG and wiring, the first 60 seconds, and safe evacuation.
Prevention
- LPG: close the cylinder valve after every use; check hoses monthly for cracks.
- Never overload sockets; replace frayed wiring — most structure fires start electrically.
- Keep a filled sand bucket or extinguisher near cooking areas, especially market stalls.
First 60 seconds
- Small pan fire: smother with a lid or damp cloth. Never pour water on burning oil.
- Gas smell: no switches, no flames — open windows, close the valve, leave.
- If it's bigger than a bucket: get everyone out first, then call the fire service.
Evacuating
- Crawl low under smoke; heat and toxins rise.
- Feel doors with the back of your hand before opening.
- Once out, stay out — report anyone missing to responders.
