Flood preparedness
Know your risk, prepare a go-bag, never walk or drive through moving water.
Before the rains
- Know if your home sits in a low-lying or drainage area.
- Prepare a go-bag: documents in a waterproof pouch, torch, power bank, water, medicines.
- Agree a family meeting point on high ground.
When water is rising
- Never walk or drive through moving water — 15 cm of moving water can knock an adult down; 60 cm floats a car.
- Switch off electricity at the mains if water is entering the building.
- Move valuables and chemicals above expected water level.
- Check on elderly and disabled neighbours.
After
- Assume floodwater is contaminated; wash anything it touched.
- Photograph damage before cleaning up (for assistance claims).
- Report blocked drains so the next rain does less harm.
