Flood preparedness

Know your risk, prepare a go-bag, never walk or drive through moving water.

Before the rains

  • Know if your home sits in a low-lying or drainage area.
  • Prepare a go-bag: documents in a waterproof pouch, torch, power bank, water, medicines.
  • Agree a family meeting point on high ground.

When water is rising

  • Never walk or drive through moving water — 15 cm of moving water can knock an adult down; 60 cm floats a car.
  • Switch off electricity at the mains if water is entering the building.
  • Move valuables and chemicals above expected water level.
  • Check on elderly and disabled neighbours.

After

  • Assume floodwater is contaminated; wash anything it touched.
  • Photograph damage before cleaning up (for assistance claims).
  • Report blocked drains so the next rain does less harm.
