Prevention
- Never leave cooking fires or coal pots unattended; keep a bucket of sand near cooking areas.
- Don't overload sockets; replace frayed cables; switch off appliances at night.
- Store LPG cylinders upright, outdoors or in ventilated spaces — check hoses for leaks with soapy water, never a flame.
If fire breaks out
- Call 192 immediately — then report on the platform so neighbours are alerted.
- Get out, stay out. Crawl low under smoke. Never re-enter for property.
- For a pan fire: turn off the heat and cover with a lid or wet cloth — never pour water on burning oil.
- For LPG: if you can safely reach the valve, close it; otherwise evacuate and keep others away.
